Who’s on Top?

Since 1900, every U.S. census had shown that either Miami or Jacksonville have been the cities in Florida with the largest population.

Such was not the case in the 19th century. When Florida became a state in 1845, St. Augustine was the largest city. From 1850 until the Civil War, Pensacola was the most populated city in the state. Immediately after the Civil War, Jacksonville took the top spot, but by 1880 Key West, with less than 10,000 residents became Florida’s largest city.
