A Common Standard
In the early years of agriculture in South Florida, farmers often packed their produce for market in containers that might vary in size from those of a neighboring farmer. Both brokers and shippers needed standardization, which commercial packing houses provided. By the 1930s, all farmers and packers were using a standard bushel-sized container for most crops.
