John Nelson
The first Pompano Beach resident to win an Olympic medal was Pompano Beach High School student John Nelson, who participated n the 1964 Olympics, held in Tokyo, and took the silver medal in the 1,500 meter freestyle (swimming). In the 1968 Olympics, held in Mexico City, Nelson, now a student at Yale, won the gold medal in the 4x200 meter freestyle (one of his teammates on the relay was Mark Spitz). He also won the bronze medal in the individual 200 meter freestyle.
